Website or App: Which Does Your Business Actually Need First?
"Should we build an app?" comes up early in almost every conversation we have with a new business, usually before the website even exists. In most cases, the website should come first — but not always. Here's the actual decision, stripped of sales pitch.
Start with a website if...
- You need to be found on Google — apps aren't indexed the way websites are, so search traffic goes to your site, not your app.
- People need to evaluate you before committing — pricing, portfolio, reviews, contact details. That's a browsing job, and browsing favours the web.
- You want the lowest-friction way for a stranger to reach you. No one installs an app to check if a business is legitimate.
- Your budget is limited and needs to do the most work. A website is almost always the cheaper first step, and it doubles as your app's marketing page later.
An app earns its place when...
- People will use your product repeatedly, not just once — booking, ordering, tracking, messaging.
- You need device features a browser can't reliably give you: push notifications, offline access, camera or location in the background.
- Retention matters more than discovery — an app icon on someone's home screen is a stronger habit loop than a bookmark.
The order that actually works
For most businesses we work with, the sequence is: website first to establish credibility and get found, then an app once there's a proven, repeatable reason for someone to come back often. Building the app first, before the audience or the use case is proven, is the most common way we see budget wasted.
